Backwaters: Alleppey

In Alleppey, we did not do the customary spend-your-day-in-a-houseboat routine. Instead we chose to stay at a resort overlooking the backwaters and took an hour long boat ride into the lake.

The country boat – The backwaters in Alleppey are lined with resorts that use boats like these to ferry their guests across from the car park.

What is a leisurely activity for travellers is a routine task for the locals…

They use boats of different shapes and sizes to ferry themselves to and from the lake shore to go about their everyday lives.

No matter how many sunsets you watch, you will never tire of this singular activity of nature. The sun sets with as much pride and aura as the glory with which it rises. And the calm waters – it drinks the parting hues of the sun, mirroring the sky as a final goodbye.

The ubiquitous Chinese fishing nets. Well you know how the saying goes – “give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, and you feed him for lifetime.”

  1. Hi, great pictures! I am going to kerala in 2 weeks and I’m not sure whether to book a houseboat in advance or whether to turn up and risk it / haggle. Do you have any advice? 🙂 Thank you fellow traveller

    1. Hi.. Thank you for writing to us. Depends on when you are planning to go. We booked on the spot. A lot of resorts also have tie-ups with house boats. Do you plan on staying in the house boat overnight? If we may suggest, its better to take a morning to evening houseboat ride, where you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the backwaters, they even stop and take you fishing and serve delicious lunch on board. Staying over night does not make sense as the boats dock during the night and be warned, with all the water around, mosquitoes may be a problem.
Hope this helps. Let us know if you need any other information.
